Cold Sores or Oral Herpes: Cold sore is caused by Herpes Simplex Type 1 virus or HSV 1. Blisters caused by HSV 1 are apparent and can be seen on outside of the lips, nostrils, chin, gums, and other parts of the face. When cold sores, often called mouth sores or oral herpes develops a person will often experience soreness, tightness, burning sensation in the area where cold sore develops. A group of small blisters often grow together and rapture to form one large, sore that collects fluid. If the sore is large, the skin may crack or even separate when there is movement in the area (such as under the lips). Most herpes simplex type 1 infections are often contracted during the childhood years, and many infections go quiet unnoticed as cold sore symptoms can be minor or not apparent.

However, please note only a small percentage of oral herpes is sexually transmitted. Often oral herpes is acquired during childhood days when an infected adult kisses a baby (social kissing). Many of this HSV 1 infection acquired are totally without symptoms. Like genital herpes, the infected person may feel as if they have common flu. Often, people infected with oral herpes caused by herpes simplex type 1 virus have recurrences bordering the lips and face. These are commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. Cold sores are contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another. Scabs form and heal within 7 to 14 days.

There exists no permanent cure with conventional medicine but there are natural remedies available for cure and prevention. Please CLICK on NATRUAL REMEDIES FOR COLD SORES to check the natural remedies available to get rid of Cold sores or fever blisters and prevent further outbreaks.

Causes of Cold Sores:

Cold sores are most commonly caused by the contagious virus herpes simplex 1 but may also be caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. The virus causes blisters in the place where it was introduced in the skin. HSV 1 virus does not migrate through the body to cause blisters in areas where it was not introduced in the skin. Children contract the virus from immediate family members or from other HSV 1 infected relatives. A person who is either developing cold sore or has a cold sore already can transmit the virus to another person by social kissing. If you are sharing your cup of tea or coffee or juice with another person, it can also transmit the virus. Infected person or a person developing infection should not give oral sex as the virus will be transmitted  to the genitals of the sexual partner.  The herpes virus is transmitted when you have direct contact with an infected person. The herpes virus usually appears within 2 to 20 days after exposure.

Symptoms of Cold sores:

When a person is infected for the first time, the symptoms are very severe.  Some of the first time symptoms include having a sense of being ill, fever, feeling exhausted etc., Some experience very sore mouth,  swollen glands, and will have difficulty eating. The symptoms during the first infection may be more severe and may last a little longer.  After the initial cold sore infection, herpes simplex virus will enter into an inactive phase. Cold Sore or fever blisters that are contracted during the childhood years, go completely unnoticed as the symptoms can be minor or not apparent. Oral herpes is most often acquired in childhood, and many acquisitions are totally without symptoms. The virus will remain inactive without causing any damage. When the immunity level of the body goes down it travels back down the neuron to cause a skin outbreak at the site of the initial infection. Since the body has already developed antibodies for the HSV 1, recurrences are usually less severe compared to the primary infection and lasts for 7 to 10 days.  Usually these antibodies combat further recurrences.

Prevention of Cold sores:

Cold Sore or fever blister is caused by HSV 1 type of virus, usually causes blisters on the lips, nose, chin and other parts of the face. Though 60% of the adults in the US are tested positive for HSV 1, it should be noted that the vast majority of the cases are not sexually transmitted. Cold Sore or fever blisters contracted during the childhood years, and they go completely unnoticed as the symptoms can be minor or not apparent. When a person is developing oral herpes or if a person who is already infected with HSV 1, kisses a child the child gets infected. Like genital herpes, the infected person may feel as if they have the flu as most of them don’t show visible symptoms. Often, the site of recurrence is the border between the lip and the face. These are commonly known as cold sores or mouth sores. Some of the preventive measures are..

♦   Refrain from touching the mouth blisters/mouth sore even if you feel comfortable  to touch them. The fluid collected in the sore contains live virus. So if one happens to touch other parts of the body after touching an active sore, herpes simplex virus will be transmitted to the new location. A person infected with cold sore should not involve in the act of social kissing. Sores heal fast when you leave it alone.

♦   Refrain from rubbing your eyes after touching an active mouth sore. If you do so you will get the infection in the eyes. Always sanitize your hands if you have active sore. You should not lubricate your contact lenses (if you use one) with your own saliva if you have an active cold sore.

♦   Avoid transmitting the HSV1 virus to other uninfected areas of your body ( do not touch other areas of your body) by sanitizing your hand if you have touched an active sore.  Eyes and fingers (where there are cuts) are vulnerable. Washing hands after sores have been touched will cleanse virus-containing fluid and prevent spreading herpes to other parts of the body.

♦   Infected person should refrain from sharing tea or coffee, water bottles or any utensils like spoon, plates etc., with others.

♦   Do not share personal cosmetics like lip balm, lip gloss or lipstick with others if you have an active sore

♦   Avoid spicy foods, citrus fruits, vinegar as they irritate the sore around your mouth. Please don’t open your mouth wide as stretching your mouth too much could cause the sore or scab to split.

Home Remedies for Cold Sores:

Home remedies give much needed temporary relief. However, one will get it back and they are not permanent cure. They often come back when you have infection with common cold or flu. So the key to prevent recurrences is to boost body’s immune system. Vitamin C is one of the key ingredients. You can take Vitamin C available in natural form found in lemon or lime or take Vitamin C supplements. Frequent intake of garlic is very important. People who are infected should pound a handful of garlic and boil it with milk (boil in slow fire for 15-20 min) and drink it once or twice a day. Replace refined sugar with honey. As far as possible take organic natural vegetarian diet (can include Fishes)

    • Before the cold sore becomes visible, or it is developing into a blister a person will often experience soreness, tightness, burning sensation in the area where cold sore develops. This is the best time to give ice cube treatment. Place two or three cubes of ice in a muslin cloth and press it in the area of infection for 10-15 min. Ice cube treatment will lessens the impact of sore or sometime makes it to disappear altogether.
    • Tea tree oil (use raw tea tree oil) has an excellent anti-septic and anti-viral effect and is one of the best home remedy. Dab some oil in cotton and apply it in the area of infection. Do this three to four times a day and you will see good results.
    • It is also believed that pressing used tea-bags (boiled in hot water for 5 min) helps get rid of the sores.
    • Honey is a wonderful medicine for cold sores. Dab honey (organic honey is preferred) on the sore and apply it 2-3 times a day. Honey is an excellent anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent which is very effective against cold sore virus
